The Montesa Cota 4RT is one of the motorcycles with the highest economic valuation in relation to its year of manufacture. That is, in an equivalent model of any other brand with the same age, the Cota has a higher market value.
This means that, despite the years that the model has behind it, there are owners willing to give it a new aesthetic look and invest in an improvement in mechanical performance.
The Montesa Cota 4RT has another big advantage (or not, depending on how you look at it). The model has not changed essentially in the last 15 years, so it is relatively easy to make an aesthetic and functional “upgrade” from the first versions (2005 – 2014) and update them to the next series (2014 – 2019).
Precisely, the latter is what we have done with our protagonist: a Montesa Cota 4RT standard 2008. We are going to tell you about all the work that has been done on it.
MONTESA COTA 4RT - ROTHMANS
As you can see in the photo above, the bike had already received a major mechanical and chassis update, but its aesthetics still seemed outdated.
SUSPENSIONS
Starting with the front axle, this Montesa Cota 4RT receives Showa forks from Montesa Cota 315R, with that characteristic color of “rainbow” bars, which were discontinued in 2004, but which the official team has mounted on its competition bikes since the 2021 season. For this, it is best to turn to the second-hand market or a quartering. The bottles have been protected with fork protectors for Showa in imitation carbon plastic.
This same protection has been used on the ignition cover, swingarm and air filter box.
Continuing with the chassis part, although it is not directly visible in the photos, the shock absorber is Öhlins, and not Showa. Montesa never mounted Öhlins on its bikes, so there is no specific component for this Cota 4RT, but a shock absorber designed for another brand has been adapted.
IMPROVED BRAKING
Returning to the front axle, a Renthal Fat Bar handlebar and a complete Braktec brake system that includes a pump, hose and caliper have been fitted. This Braktec brake system is marketed like this, already bled and ready to be placed on the bike (here is the purchase link).
BODYWORK & AESTHETICS
At the body level, all the original plastic has been replaced by a fender for the original Montesa Cota 4RT from the 2014 to 2019 models, which fit perfectly without the need for any adaptation. The lines are sharper and the rear fender ends higher, providing a much more modern aesthetic. The front fender also fits perfectly, with the difference being sharper and less rounded.
Both fenders have been put in white, although it is also available in red.
The sticker kit we have chosen is the Honda Rothmans for Montesa Cota 4RT, although there are other interesting variants.
The footpegs are S3 Parts Hard Rock aluminium in red, which offer a great grip and support surface.
"The Montesa Cota 4RT has undergone few modifications since 2005, so it is relatively easy to update its aesthetics to recent years. A change of bodywork that, together with a kit of stickers with a strong personality, like the Rothmans, gives way to a very exclusive bike".

MONTESA COTA 4RT - termignoni
In terms of mechanics, there are interesting improvements. If you remember correctly, one of the novelties that Montesa introduced with its renewed 2014 range was the reduction of engine braking. This operation has been carried out on this 2008 model; This is a relatively complex task that requires the intervention of an expert.
On the other hand, the complete Termignoni exhaust for Montesa Cota 4RT is striking, which is composed of a manifold and silencer. The gain is twofold: on the one hand, a very significant saving in weight, and on the other hand, a wide improvement in performance in the mid and high rev range.
As a curiosity, an intercooler has been placed in the cooling circuit, coming from a Vertigo Vertical. This system basically consists of a “cooler” made of aluminum through which the water circulates and allows the temperature at which the circuit works to be lowered.
In short, an interesting adaptation that you can adapt to your circumstances, staying only in the aesthetics, or going a little further to improve certain performance of the bike.
And beyond that, in the Trialworld Store you can find even more elements to prepare a Montesa Cota 4RT, since there are “premium” manufacturers such as Costa Parts or S3 Parts that have more aesthetic and functional preparation options in their catalog.
This unit can be visited at our physical facilities at the Trialworld Store, in the Európolis industrial estate in Las Rozas (Madrid).
