Epic return of Laia Sanz, who wins her 14th Trial World Championship title

After eight years away from the Trial World Championship, Laia Sanz has returned to the top of the podium, winning the last round of the 2021 season with her GASGAS TXT GP 300 to become Women’s TrialGP World Champion, thus adding an incredible collection of 14 world titles in the specialty!

Proving once again that she is the undisputed queen of trial, Laia Sanz did exactly what she had to do in the all-important final round of the 2021 TrialGP World Championship, winning the event and an incredible 14th trial title in the process. Laia came into the Portuguese event one point behind her closest rival in the championship, Emma Bristow, but Laia showed her winning mentality from the moment she entered the first zone of the day.

"After an eight-year absence from the Trial World Championships, Laia's long-awaited return has resulted in her 14th Trial World Championship."

Fully aware that there was no margin for error, he completed the first lap by scoring just four feet. With this result she was already World Champion, however, the best was yet to come, as on the second lap she only accumulated two points and made her best ride of the season, when it mattered most. With this third victory in the 2021 championship, Laia has never dropped below second place during the season, and with her serenity and consistency she has managed to claim her fourteenth trial world title.

This impressive victory has even more merit considering that Laia had been absent from the Trial this year, after abandoning the speciality at the end of 2013, due to the impossibility of combining it with the Enduro World Championship and the Dakar Rally. In addition, her return has been especially complicated, after overcoming a very difficult last three years in terms of health, being forced to overcome mononucleosis, Q fever and Lyme disease.

DECLARATIONS

LAIA SANZ"It's been an amazing day, to win is fantastic. It wasn't the toughest test of the championship, but the difficult thing for me was to stay 100% focused, so mentally it wasn't easy at all. To return to the top TrialGP competition after so many years of absence and finally to do it successfully and win another world title, is incredible. Apart from the third section on the first lap, I think today I had one of my best days of the championship. It hasn't been an easy year for me, so I'm proud that I was able to do what I expected. I also want to thank the team and GASGAS, who have been very good to me. It's the result we've all worked very hard for. After everything I've been suffering in recent years, I deserved this title more than ever."

ALBERT CABESTANY"It's incredible the feeling of being able to form from what Laia has achieved today. It has been a very hard goal because Laia has been battling an illness all year, so she has not been able to train and prepare as she wanted. That made this weekend even more difficult for her, but she has faced the pressure as Laia does and this is the reason why she has won so many titles. She has performed perfectly in the race, showing why she is number one. With our TrialGP riders we have once again fought for the podium, which is never easy. We've combined good performances with some mistakes, but now it's time to look forward and we'll work hard to improve and be stronger next season."
