Scorpa was founded in 1993 by Marc Teissier and Joel Domergue, dedicating itself from its beginnings to the world of Trial, distinguishing itself by offering efficient motorcycles of high quality and marked by a strong personality.
The first model was equipped with a Rotax engine, participating in the World Championship and French Championship in the hands of Frenchman Bruno Camozzi. It was introduced in November 1993 and after its official presentation proceeded to the mass production of the Scorpa Works 294, of which 100 units were sold, which would give way to an improved Works 295 of which 250 units were sold.
SCORPA EASY
In 1995, the Scorpa Easy was introduced, marked by new technical solutions and a completely innovative design. The new bike, ridden by Bruno Camozzi, surprised everyone by winning the Toulouse Indoor, which produced a flood of calls and orders about this new brand, coming from all over the world. The most important of these was that of the Japanese Norito, who became interested in the model.
The initial production was only 200 motorcycles.
In 1996 a rear braking system and major improvements to the exhaust system were added. In 1998, in addition to winning the Six Days of Scotland with Britain’s Graham Jarvis, Scorpa placed 4th in the Trial World Championship.
The Easy model would be produced in two displacements, 250 and 280 cc, and was always evolving under the premise established by Joël Domergue of offering a product of the highest quality, something that did not go unnoticed by the people of Yamaha, who began firm negotiations with Scorpa from 1999.
COLLABORATION WITH YAMAHA FOR ENGINES
One of the reasons was the call from Yamaha to offer its engines and become a supplier and customer. The Japanese brand has always been interested in trial, but had abandoned production since its TYZ model, given the low profitability that a print run of less than 15,000 units has for them.
On the one hand, Scorpa can have high-quality engines at a lower price, and on the other hand, Yamaha, which sells Scorpa in Japan, an important trial market, under its own brand. This is already the case with the 2000 models.
The result of this collaboration is the impressive SY 250 Racing, equipped with multiple aluminium components and truly surprising lines. From 2002 onwards, production was optimised with the launch of a variant called Long Ride, equipped with a seat and a tank with greater autonomy.
LAUNCH OF THE FOUR-STROKE SY
In 2003, the brand already has a production of 800 units, starting the production of the 125 4-stroke, with a Yamaha engine, conceived as a multipurpose motorcycle and suitable for all audiences. A version called the TY-S 175E engine with a larger displacement was even launched to expand the range and satisfy the English markets (United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia…).
Another important moment is the launch of the SY-F with a four-stroke, five-valve engine signed by Yamaha; this mechanics came from the WR 250 Enduro and were adapted according to the demands of Trial. A Long Ride version of this model was also launched with the aim of satisfying Trial-Excursion lovers.
Scorpa was acquired in the autumn of 2009 by Sherco’s company. The 2-stroke models are equipped with Sherco engines, but not with the new mechanical evolution launched in 2010, but with the mechanics used until 2009. Four-stroke models continue to be equipped with Yamaha engines.
