The Baiona GP is cancelled and the RFME looks for a new location

It was an open secret that the 2021 Spanish Grand Prix, scheduled for September 11 and 12 in Baiona, was hanging by a thread. Finally, the organisers, led by the Peña Moteros Val Miñor, have announced the definitive cancellation of the event with just over a month to go.

THE REASONS

We will remember that the CET was scheduled to be held in Baiona last year, just at the time when the pandemic broke out, with the entire route already marked and the investments made.

On this occasion , the reason has been precisely that: the economic one. The deep instability derived from Covid19 has led to an unfortunate lack of support and sponsors to cover the costs of the competition. Sponsors that cannot be guaranteed the presence of spectators and to which we must add the low media coverage that trial has in our country.

COSTS OF HOSTING A WORLD CUP

We experienced this same situation last year with Titos Presa, from the Pobladura R Motoclub, who on the eve of organizing the Spanish GP also ran out of funding. In that case, however, it was decided to continue with very significant economic losses that, to this day, have not been compensated.

Organising a World Cup involves total costs of approximately €30,000 to €40,000, depending on the location. The registrations, unlike the CET, do not go to the organizer, but to the FIM, which forces Motoclub to look for its own ways of financing to make the competition viable.

The lack of prospect of being able to gather such support has favored the cancellation of the event before the payment of the corresponding fees to the FIM.

SOLUTIONS

After four cancellations of locations in this 2021 season, the FIM is working on keeping the Spanish Grand Prix in a different location, also trying to maintain the planned date.

Within these locations, the preferential ones are those where tests of this nature have already been held. We are referring to Pobladura de las Regueras (León), Camprodon (Girona) or La Nucia (Alicante).

In any case, the only thing that is confirmed today is the non-celebration of the Spanish GP in Baiona.
