The process of assembling and disassembling the tyre of a Trial motorcycle is a task that a priori may be basic, but it ends up getting complicated when we talk about tubeless tyres, which are practically 100% of the Trial bikes of the last 20 years.
In this tutorial on how to mount a tubeless tire you will see that it is a process that can take about 20 minutes and requires minimal tools that, given its low cost, it is interesting to have in the garage.

PREVIOUS TIPS FOR CHANGING A TRIAL TYRE
For the usual use of an amateur rider the durability of a tyre, despite being very soft, is very high. Normally, the wear of the
Trial tyre
, if it is not made an intensive use of tracks or roads, tends to be in the form of saw teeth, drawing an angle of 45º from front to rear.
A good trick that you can take advantage of with this tutorial is to turn the used tire upside down, making that sawtooth now be in the direction of rotation of the wheel. This way you will be able to extend the life of the rear tyre of your Trial bikes even more.
Finally, always remind you that for optimal wear, it is always important to have the correct pressures, something that we already addressed in this article on the basic
tuning tips of the Trial bike
.
TRIAL TYRE CHANGE PROCESS
STEP 1) GET ALL THE AIR OUT OF THE WHEEL
First of all, of course, we will get all the air out of the tyre. To do this, we can use the valve itself and extract the air little by little, or use a specific tool to disassemble the howitzer and let the air out suddenly. The advantage of using the specific wrench is that we make sure that all the air comes out of the tire and thus we will facilitate the steps that come next.
You have to get all the air out of the tyre, preferably by removing the howitzer
STEP 2) POP THE REAR WHEEL TIRE
The second step is to bead or peel the tire off the rim. If you have the tool, it will be relatively quick and easy, but without it it will probably be one of the most laborious steps in the whole assembly and disassembly process. Here you have a
tubeless tire bead breaker
.
It is important to do this operation on both sides of the tire and manually make sure that the rim dances freely inside the tire. The tyre must be removed from the rim to remove it.
STEP 3) REMOVE THE TYRE FROM THE MOTORCYCLE
Now it’s time to pull the rear tire off the rim. For this process we will use detachables and we will always complete one of the sides first before getting on the other.
Once this point is completed, we will have the tire to replace outside the rim and we will start with the second part of the process, where we will finish mounting the new tubeless tire inside the rim.
STEP 4. PREPARING FOR THE PLACEMENT OF THE TIRE ON THE RIM
We’ll start by soaping the new tyre on both sidewalls. We can do this by impregnating it directly with our hands or by mixing soap + water in a separate glass and using a brush to apply it to the tire. We impregnate the entire sidewall of the new tyre with soap. Then we place the tire inside the rim
STEP 5. INSERT THE TRIAL TYRE INTO THE RIM
We will load weight on the tire to create a gap at the bottom of the tire and thus be able to insert the rim. In this step it is important to make sure that we have the rim on a suitable structure and neither the rear disc nor the crown suffer.
Next, we will use the reelables to insert one side of the tyre and then the opposite.
We will use the levers to place the tire inside the rim
STEP 6. PLACING THE MOUSSE ON THE TRIAL TYRE
We already have the tubeless tire inside the rim. We see how it dances and no matter how much we swell it is impossible for it to take a breath.
To prevent this from happening, the first thing we will do is make sure that the compressor is at maximum load. Next, we will soap the mousse well (useful that we have mentioned above) and insert it between the gap between the tire and the rim. We’ll make sure it’s tucked in, just like it looks in the photo.
If you don’t have this mousse,
here’s a link
to buy it.
Now we take the compressor and start giving air to the tire. As the tire gains pressure, we will observe how the mousse is gradually “spat out” by the tire. Don’t worry if you have to repeat this step several times, as sometimes it’s normal for air to escape from one side. Therefore, you must be patient and make sure that the mousse is well fitted and contains the air that you are putting into the tyre.
It is important to know that if at any point we see that the mousse gets stuck and the tire continues to gain pressure, we pull it gently while continuing to bring air into the wheel.
The mousse should be well soaped when we place it. We must fit the mousse well between the tire and the rim
STEP 7. INFLATION OF THE TRIAL TYRE
In the previous step, it is very important not to stop putting air into the tyre continuously. We will stop when we notice that the tire is completely attached to the rim. We’ll know because he makes one or two strong “plas”.
We will stop putting air when the tire is approximately 2 kilos of pressure. If you have previously removed the valve howitzer, have the tool ready to replace it as soon as possible.
STEP 8) Our recommendation is to leave the tyre with these 2 kilos of pressure for at least 24 hours (if possible), as we will ensure a perfect fit. If we immediately deflate it to the ideal pressure for trialing, we run the risk of the tyre slipping.
The air should be continuous and the mousse will come out little by little.
Afterwards we will adjust the
inflation pressures of the trial tyres
correctly.
